CORE GROUP 1: AGRICULTURE AND NUTRITION
This group is led by Dr Khalid Mahmood and Professor Tariq Butt. UPSIGN's agriculture & nutrition team seeks to facilitate coherence and assist with the delivery of impact from current the Global challenges Research Fund (GCRF) investments in Pakistan through engaging with key stakeholders including: decision makers, industry and communities. The focus is to deliver Sustainable Food Systems to face and withstand climate change.
Over 40% of children under 5 years old are malnourished and about half of these kids have stunted growth. This is predominantly due to food insecurity at the household level, and lack of access to diverse diets.
UPSIGN's FOCUS ON AGRICULTURE & NUTRITION:
Crop Breeding for resilience and enhanced nutritional quality using agronomic and genetic approaches.
Encouraging the movement of nutrients to humans and livestock diets.
Reduction of the nutrient depletion,
Enable the farmers to achieve at least 80% of the non-water-limited yield potential, defining future farming landscapes.
Climate-smart food systems that achieve productivity with minimum risk and environmental footprint.
