Workshop 2: Affordable Healthcare
WORKSHOP: AFFORDABLE HEALTHCARE
The workshop on Affordable Healthcare (held on 10th and 11th March 2020) provided an opportunity for over 45 academics, healthcare professionals and policy makers to come together and explore innovative and affordable global healthcare
solutions for Pakistan and the region. Topics included general health, gender inequalities in health, mental health and reproductive health as well as low-cost healthcare solutions by using bioengineering and biomaterials, for varying clinical challenges including, bone, skin, nerve and management of wounds and injuries.

CONSORTIA BUILDING:
By the end of day two, six potential networks formally presented their ideas to the rest of the workshop. These included:

health and wellbeing of working women

healthy brain through the life course

burns and their impact on mental health

adolescent health and wellbeing
-
bone, skin and nerve regeneration diagnosis

management of diabetic foot
-
breast cancer detection

REFLECTIONS FROM UPSIGN'S AFFORDABLE HEALTHCARE CO-LEADS:
Dr Parveen Ali commented
"There is a need to use an interdisciplinary approach to involve stakeholders such as health care professionals, mental health professionals, non-governmental organisations, policy makers and women themselves and this workshop is the first step in this direction”
Professor Ihtesham Rehman said
"Through these workshops, we strive to address concerns by development of Pakistan-specific approaches, materials and methodologies for the development of low-cost high-quality sustainable medical solutions"
LOOKING FORWARD:
It is now hoped that the networks will continue to work together and form long lasting partnerships to help promote knowledge exchange, collaborative research and capacity building.
